Marquee signing = player wanted by clubs larger than/more successful clubs than us.
Defoe a marquee signing? No chance.

He will be 35 this year. Legs go very quickly and he is more of a Bournemouth/Hull signing not a club at the 'next level'.

Re: Jermain Defoe has admitted he was flattered by interest from West Ham
What we're all forgetting is that there has never been a player, or sports person for that matter, that has been at the top level beyond the age of 35. EVER.

Oh....

We've not had a player score more than 10 in the league since 04-05!

What a pile of cock. Marlon Harewood scored 14 league goals in 05/06.

That is a good point simon. But I think at this stage of his career he just wants to play football, he clearly has his money now and if he's available and interested it's a no brainer.

If he was 25 he would be a £50m player.

A 'marquee' signing has to want to come to you in the first place. And if he really is that good, he'll be looking to do better than a mid table team.

If he leaves Sunderland, which looks highly likely, there will still be plenty of offers on the table for him. He's a rare commodity in this league, tried and tested. I'd be looking to sign him before anyone else.

Depends on your definition of 'Marquee'. For most people it just seems about the amount of money you spend, which seems nuts to me.

Didn't Zaza and Tore cost £10m to RENT for four months?

Or you can have Defoe permanently who is pretty much nailed on 15 goals for next season and hardly ever gets injured for at least for half of that, or possibly free?

For every Bergkamp and Drogba there are probably 50 players that do not reach that level or anywhere near it.

I love hearing about how 'two bob' the owners are, when they go for proven players like Defoe, Snodgrass and Fonte as well as mopping up some young talent like Fletcher and Holland but then also moan when we end up paying £2m a month loan fees plus wages to rent players that just aren't goods enough.

"We've not had a player score more than 10 in the league since 04-05!"

"More" being the operative word

Sorry 13

That was at y2smiff stating how long it had been since we last had one player score ten league goals in a season. He was about a decade out!

Apart from when Nolan got 10 in our first season back up you mean?

Re: Jermain Defoe has admitted he was flattered by interest from West Ham
Y2, aah better than the untested argument. This is our owners new mantra after previously stating that foreign markets are the place (and easy to crack).

Yes, I would rather have a 35 YEAR OLD Defoe than an untested Drogba, Henry, Ronaldo, Bergkamp.

Re: Jermain Defoe has admitted he was flattered by interest from West Ham
Personally I wouldn't have a problem with a marquee signing that is going to get us a goal every other game (as Defoe has consistently).
We've not had a player score more than 10 in the league since 04-05!
Surely he's a better option than another Prem untested Foreign league player or someone making the step up from the Championship. It's not just us that have struggled to find players capable of making that leap.
Would he improve the team? Definite yes

Agree with Vexed but as stated, he will come as our marquee signing.

I'd take him as third striker if we don't have to pay anything.

Re: Jermain Defoe has admitted he was flattered by interest from West Ham
You know he will be our marquee signing this summer.
Free transfer if Sunderland go down or a few million quid if they stay up.
He will be what? 35/36? Legs can go in a matter of weeks at that age.

Next level! Welcome back to the days that never left of signing players like Suker, Wright etc

Regardless of what you say about him, they hours and time he is spending with young Bradley is priceless.

As I have a boy around this young kids age its absolutely gutwrenching and Defoe is acting with absolute dignity and compassion.
